How It Works

A medical appointment call usually follows a simple sequence.

Ask for the appointment

Je voudrais prendre rendez-vous.

Hear what is available

Cette semaine, ce n’est pas possible.

J’ai une place le 15 septembre.

Accept or refuse the proposal

Accept:

Ça me convient.

Refuse:

Je ne suis pas disponible.

Ask for another option

Vous avez une autre date ?

or:

On peut déplacer le rendez-vous ?

Confirm

The most important information is:

date + time

Repeat both if you want to check:

Le 15 septembre à 15 heures, c’est bien ça ?

Micro Grammar

Pattern 1 — Je voudrais + infinitive

Use:

Je voudrais + verb

to make a polite request.

Examples:

Je voudrais prendre rendez-vous.

Je voudrais changer le rendez-vous.

Je voudrais parler au secrétariat.

It is softer and more polite than a direct command.

Pattern 2 — être disponible

Use:

Je suis disponible.

Je ne suis pas disponible.

Ask:

Vous êtes disponible quand ?

Examples:

Je suis disponible lundi matin.

Je ne suis pas disponible mardi.

Je suis disponible après 14 heures.

Pronunciation Focus

Notice the connection:

vous‿êtes

/ vu zɛt /

And practise the appointment chunk:

prendre rendez-vous

Say it smoothly as one group:

/pʁɑ̃dʁ ʁɑ̃.de.vu/

Phrase Builder

One compact pattern

Je suis disponible + DAY / DATE + TIME

Je suis disponible + le 15 septembre + à 10 heures.

Change the pieces:

Je suis disponible lundi matin.

Je suis disponible mardi après-midi.

Je suis disponible le 15 septembre à 15 heures.

For a problem:

Je ne suis pas disponible + time.

Then add:

Vous avez une autre date ?

Full Pattern

In everyday French, you may hear:

mon médecin traitant

This refers to the doctor someone regularly sees for their general medical care.

When calling the office, you can simply say:

Je voudrais prendre rendez-vous avec le docteur Martin.

Simple French

— Avec quel médecin ?

— Avec mon médecin traitant, le docteur Martin.

The useful language skill here is not explaining the healthcare system—it is knowing how to name the doctor and make the appointment clearly.

Final Challenge

You call your doctor’s office.

You want an appointment this week, but there is no availability.

The receptionist offers:

15 septembre à 10 heures

You need to:

  1. ask for an appointment;

  2. understand that this week is not possible;

  3. repeat the proposed date;

  4. accept or refuse the time;

  5. confirm the final appointment.

Example

— Cabinet du docteur Martin, bonjour.

— Bonjour. Je voudrais prendre rendez-vous.

— Cette semaine, ce n’est pas possible.

— D’accord.

— Oui.

— Ça me convient.

— Parfait.

Second Step

Now imagine you cannot come at 10.

Call again and use:

Je ne suis pas disponible à 10 heures.

On peut déplacer le rendez-vous ?
