Quick Check

  1. What is Isabel allergic to?

  2. What two ingredients does she want to avoid?

Answers:

  1. Nuts.

  2. Nuts and cheese.

How It Works

When you need to explain a food preference or restriction, keep the message very direct.

Say what you prefer

Je préfère le poisson.

Je préfère les légumes.

Say what you do not eat

Je ne mange pas de viande.

Je ne mange pas de fromage.

State an allergy clearly

Je suis allergique aux noix.

This is more important than simply saying:

Je n’aime pas les noix.

Check the ingredients

Est-ce qu’il y a des noix ?

Est-ce qu’il y a du fromage dans le plat ?

Ask for the dish without something

Sans fromage, s’il vous plaît.

or:

Je peux avoir la salade sans fromage ?

The useful flow is:

preference → restriction → check → request

Micro Grammar

Pattern 1 — ne… pas de after a negative

When you say that you do not eat something, use:

Je ne mange pas de + food

Examples:

Je ne mange pas de viande.

Je ne mange pas de poisson.

Je ne mange pas de fromage.

Before a vowel sound, de becomes d’:

Je ne mange pas d’œufs.

Je ne mange pas d’oignons.

At A1, learn this as one useful pattern:

Je ne mange pas de…

Pattern 2 — allergique à

Use:

être allergique à + ingredient

Examples:

Je suis allergique au lait.

Je suis allergique aux noix.

Je suis allergique aux fruits de mer.

You do not need the full article system here. Learn the common chunks as complete phrases.

Pronunciation Focus

Practise:

allergique aux noix

/a.lɛʁ.ʒik o nwa/

And:

je ne mange pas de

/ʒə nə mɑ̃ʒ pa də/

In faster speech, ne may sound weak, but at A1 keep the full form clear.

Phrase Builder

One compact restriction pattern

I DON’T EAT + FOOD

Je ne mange pas de + viande.

Then check:

Est-ce qu’il y a + ingredient ?

Then request:

Sans + ingredient, s’il vous plaît.

Guided Examples

Je ne mange pas de viande.

Sans fromage, s’il vous plaît.

Semi-Guided

Je ne mange pas de ____________________.

Est-ce qu’il y a ____________________ ?

Independent Production

Build your own restaurant message:

Je préfère ____________________.

Je ne mange pas de ____________________.

Sans ____________________, s’il vous plaît.

Asking About Ingredients

Why is “Est-ce qu’il y a… ?” such a useful restaurant question in France?

Many French dishes include sauces, cheese, eggs, butter, nuts, or other ingredients that may not be obvious from the name of the dish.

At A1, you do not need to know every ingredient.

You only need to ask about the one that matters to you.

Simple French

— Est-ce qu’il y a du fromage ?

— Oui.

— Sans fromage, c’est possible ?

— Oui.

Remember

One clear ingredient question can make a restaurant interaction much easier.

Final Challenge

Mission — Order a Meal with a Restriction

You are in a restaurant.

You want to order a meal, but you have one preference and one restriction.

Your conversation must include:

  1. what you prefer;

  2. something you do not eat;

  3. one ingredient question;

  4. one request with sans;

  5. one clear allergy statement or dietary restriction.

Model

— Vous avez choisi ?

— Oui. Je préfère le poisson.

— Très bien.

— Est-ce qu’il y a des noix dans la sauce ?

— Oui.

— Je suis allergique aux noix.

— D’accord. On peut faire le plat sans noix.

— Parfait. Je ne mange pas de fromage non plus.

— Pas de problème.

— Alors, sans noix et sans fromage, s’il vous plaît.

Communication Win

The mission is successful if the restaurant understands:

what you want + what you must avoid

At the end of the lesson, you should be able to think:

“I can explain a simple food restriction clearly in French.”
