How It Works

When someone gives directions, focus on the action words.

You do not need to understand every word.

Move forward

Allez tout droit.

Continuez tout droit.

Change direction

Tournez à droite.

Tournez à gauche.

Cross something

Traversez le pont.

Traversez la rue.

Locate the destination

C’est en face de…

C’est juste à côté.

C’est juste devant vous.

Ask for the next step

If the route is too long, say:

Et après ?

This helps you get the directions one step at a time.

Micro Grammar

Pattern 1 — Direction verbs with vous

When giving directions politely, you will often hear:

Allez…

Tournez…

Traversez…

Continuez…

For now, learn these as complete chunks.

You do not need the full imperative system yet.

Examples

Allez tout droit.

Tournez à gauche.

Traversez le pont.

Continuez jusqu’à la place.

Pattern 2 — C’est + location

Use:

C’est + location expression

Examples:

C’est en face de la place.

C’est à côté de la cathédrale.

C’est juste à côté.

C’est juste devant vous.

Pronunciation Focus

Compare:

droit — /dʁwa/

droite — /dʁwat/

So:

tout droit

but:

à droite

Practise the whole chunks:

Allez tout droit.

Tournez à droite.
