How It Works

Small talk about interests becomes easier when you use three simple moves.

Say what you like

J’aime voyager.

J’adore les randonnées.

Je préfère marcher.

Ask the other person

Et toi ?

Tu aimes le sport ?

Qu’est-ce que tu aimes faire ?

React

If you agree:

Moi aussi !

If you do not:

Moi, non.

Then add your own idea:

Moi, non. Je préfère marcher.

This makes the conversation feel natural.

Micro Grammar

Pattern 1 — aimer / adorer / préférer + noun

You can put a noun after these verbs.

J’aime le tennis.

J’adore les voyages.

Je préfère la randonnée.

Pattern 2 — aimer / adorer / préférer + verb

You can also use another verb.

J’aime voyager.

J’adore jouer au tennis.

Je préfère marcher.

The second verb stays in the infinitive.

Jouer + sport

With many sports and games, French uses:

jouer à

Examples:

jouer au tennis

jouer au football

jouer au basket

So:

J’adore jouer au tennis.

Soft Negative

Instead of a strong:

Je n’aime pas.

you can say:

Je n’aime pas trop…

This is useful in social conversation.

Example:

Je n’aime pas trop courir.

Pronunciation Focus

Say these as complete chunks:

J’aime voyager.

J’adore jouer au tennis.

Moi aussi.

Moi, non.

Do not separate j’ + aime:

j’aime

not:

je — aime

Phrase Builder

Build your small-talk answer in four moves.

Step 1 — Like

J’aime…

Example:

J’aime voyager.

Step 2 — Strong preference

J’adore…

Example:

J’adore les randonnées.

Step 3 — Preference

Je préfère…

Example:

Je préfère marcher.

Step 4 — Ask

Et toi ?

Full Pattern

J’aime voyager.
J’adore les randonnées.
Je préfère marcher.
Et toi ?

React

Different interest:
