How It Works

There are several simple ways to talk about work.

Say your profession

Je suis infirmier.

Je suis professeure.

Je suis journaliste.

Say where you work

Je travaille dans un hôpital.

Je travaille dans une école.

Je travaille dans un restaurant.

Say the job you work as

Je travaille comme infirmière.

Je travaille comme journaliste.

This is especially useful when you want to describe your role.

To ask another person:

Et vous, vous faites quoi ?

or:

Vous travaillez dans quoi ?

or simply:

Vous travaillez où ?

Each question gives slightly different information.

Micro Grammar

Pattern 1 — Profession after être

In French, professions normally come directly after être.

Say:

Je suis professeur.

Je suis infirmière.

Je suis journaliste.

Not:

Je suis un professeur.

when you are simply stating your profession.

English says:

I am a teacher.

French usually says:

Je suis professeur.

No un / une in the basic profession pattern.

Profession forms

Some professions change:

infirmier → infirmière

Others can have the same spoken form:

journaliste → journaliste

Pronunciation Focus

Listen to the difference:

infirmier /ɛ̃.fiʁ.mje/

infirmière /ɛ̃.fiʁ.mjɛʁ/

The final sound helps distinguish the two forms.

Repeat:

Je suis infirmier.

Je suis infirmière.

Phrase Builder

Build a simple work introduction.

Step 1 — Profession

Je suis + profession.

Example:

Je suis infirmière.

Step 2 — Workplace

Je travaille dans + place.

Example:

Je travaille dans un hôpital.

Step 3 — Ask the other person

Et vous, vous faites quoi ?

Full Pattern

Je suis infirmière.
Je travaille dans un hôpital.
Et vous, vous faites quoi ?

More Examples

Je suis professeur.
Je travaille dans une école.

Je suis vendeur.
Je travaille dans un magasin.

Je suis cuisinier.
Je travaille dans un restaurant.
