How It Works

French greetings depend on the relationship between the speakers.

Polite / neutral

With someone you do not know well:

Bonjour.

Comment allez-vous ?

Et vous ?

Bonne journée.

Au revoir.

Use:

vous

Informal

With a friend or someone close:

Salut !

Ça va ?

Comment vas-tu ?

Et toi ?

À bientôt !

Use:

tu

Simple rule

Bonjour is a safe choice when you are not sure.

Salut is informal.

Bonne journée is normally used when you leave someone during the day.

English usually uses only you. French distinguishes:

tu — informal

vous — polite

Micro Grammar

You only need two patterns today.

Polite

Comment allez-vous ?

Très bien, merci. Et vous ?

Informal

Ça va ?

Oui, ça va. Et toi ?

Short answers are natural.

You can say:

Très bien, merci.

Ça va bien.

Ça va.

Pas mal, merci.

Pronunciation Focus

Today, notice the difference between:

tu /ty/

and

vous /vu/

Repeat:

tu — vous

et toi — et vous

comment vas-tu — comment allez-vous

Découvrir la France

Why is “bonjour” so important?

In France, it is common to say:

Bonjour !

before asking for something in a small shop, bakery, café, reception desk or another everyday interaction.

For example:

Bonjour. Je voudrais un café, s’il vous plaît.

A simple bonjour makes the interaction more polite.

A useful mini-routine is:

Bonjour !

Merci !

Bonne journée !

Final Challenge

Your Mission

Create a 20–30 second conversation.

Choose one situation:

  • you meet your neighbour;

Your conversation must include:

  1. a greeting;

  2. a question asking how the person is;

  3. a short answer;

  4. a return question;

Example Structure

— Bonjour ! Comment allez-vous ?

— Très bien, merci. Et vous ?

— Ça va bien, merci.

— Bonne journée !

— Merci, vous aussi. Au revoir !
