How It Works

A restaurant interaction usually has several small stages.

Get a table

Vous avez une table pour deux ?

For three people:

Une table pour trois ?

Ask about the food

If you are not sure what to choose:

Qu’est-ce que vous conseillez ?

The waiter may answer:

Le poisson est très bon aujourd’hui.

Order

Use:

Je vais prendre…

or:

Pour moi…

Examples:

Je vais prendre le poulet.

Pour moi, la salade.

Order a drink

The waiter may ask:

Et comme boisson ?

You can answer simply:

De l’eau, s’il vous plaît.

React to the food

A very useful simple reaction:

C’est très bon.

Finish the meal

When you are ready to leave:

L’addition, s’il vous plaît.

The restaurant flow is:

table → recommendation → order → drink → reaction → bill

Micro Grammar

Pattern 1 — Je vais prendre + noun

You already know aller in simple contexts.

In a restaurant, learn this whole pattern:

Je vais prendre + food / drink

It means:

I’ll have…

Examples

Je vais prendre le poisson.

Je vais prendre le poulet.

Je vais prendre la salade.

Je vais prendre un dessert.

This is one of the most natural ways to order.

Pattern 2 — du / de la / de l’ for food and drink

When talking about an unspecified amount of food or drink, French often uses:

du + masculine noun

de la + feminine noun

de l’ + vowel sound

Examples:

du pain

de la salade

de l’eau

At A1, learn these as chunks:

du pain

de la soupe

de l’eau

Pronunciation Focus

Practise:

de l’eau

/də lo/

The words connect smoothly.

Also practise:

Je vais prendre…

as one complete ordering chunk:

/ʒə vɛ pʁɑ̃dʁ/
