Anna: Je viens d’Ukraine. Et vous ?

Quick Check

  1. Where is Anna from?

  2. Which repair phrase does Anna use?

Answers:

  1. Ukraine.

  2. Vous pouvez répéter ?

How It Works

A first conversation does not need to be long or perfect.

You can build it from short, useful chunks:

Bonjour !

Je m’appelle…

Je viens de…

Vous habitez ici ?

Et vous ?

Vous pouvez répéter ?

À bientôt !

The important thing is to keep the interaction moving.

If you do not understand something, use a repair phrase instead of stopping the conversation.

Preview Language

In the video, you also heard:

J’ai trente ans.

Je suis journaliste.

Je travaille ici.

You do not need to study these structures in detail yet.

They are a preview of the next units.

For now, just recognise the meaning.

Micro Grammar

There is no new grammar target in this lesson.

You are reusing patterns from Lessons 1–4.

Pattern 1 — simple questions

Vous habitez ici ?

Vous venez d’où ?

Ça va ?

Pattern 2 — short personal answers

Je m’appelle James.

Je viens de Londres.

J’habite à Lyon.

Pronunciation Focus

Say complete chunks in one rhythm group:

Je m’appelle James.

Je viens de Londres.

Vous habitez ici ?

Vous pouvez répéter ?

The goal is smooth communication, not perfect individual sounds.

Phrase Builder

Build your 60-second conversation in six moves.

1. Greet

Bonjour !

2. Introduce yourself

Je m’appelle + name.

3. Say where you are from

Je viens de + place.

4. Ask a question

Vous venez d’où ?

or:

Vous habitez ici ?

5. Repair if needed

Pardon ?

Vous pouvez répéter ?

6. Finish

Découvrir la France

Why do people say “Bienvenue à Lyon”?

When someone arrives in a new city, country, workplace or group, you may hear:

Bienvenue !

It means:

Welcome!

And you can add a place:

Bienvenue à Lyon !

Bienvenue en France !

It is a simple but warm way to welcome someone.

Simple French

— Je viens de Londres.

— Ah, d’accord. Bienvenue à Lyon !

One small phrase can make a first conversation feel much friendlier.

Final Challenge

Imagine that you meet someone new at a professional event, a language meetup or a coworking space.

Your conversation should include:

  1. a greeting;

  2. your name;

  3. where you are from;

  4. two simple questions;

  5. two answers;

  6. one repair phrase;

  7. a polite ending.

Possible Questions

Choose two:

Comment vous vous appelez ?

Vous venez d’où ?

Vous habitez ici ?

Vous parlez français ?

Ça va ?

Repair Phrase

Choose one:

Pardon ?

Vous pouvez répéter ?

Je ne comprends pas.

Example Structure

— Bonjour ! Je m’appelle James.

— Moi, c’est Camille. Enchantée !

— Enchanté ! Je viens de Londres. Et vous ?

— Je viens de Lyon.

— Vous habitez ici ?

— Oui.

— Pardon, vous pouvez répéter ?

— Oui, j’habite ici.

— Ah, d’accord ! À bientôt !

— À bientôt !

Optional Preview

If you already feel comfortable, you can add:

J’ai trente ans.

or:

Je suis journaliste.

But these are optional.

The goal of the mission is to combine Unit 1 language successfully, not to study new grammar.
