How It Works

To describe a routine, you do not need long sentences.

You can build the day in small time blocks.

Morning

Le matin, je me lève à six heures et demie.

Je commence à huit heures.

Midday

À midi et demi, je prends ma pause.

Afternoon

L’après-midi, je travaille.

Evening

Je finis à dix-sept heures trente.

Après, je rentre chez moi.

A routine becomes easy to understand when you connect time + action.

Micro Grammar

Pattern 1 — Time + action

Use:

time expression + je + verb

Examples:

Le matin, je travaille.

À midi, je déjeune.

L’après-midi, je travaille.

Le soir, je rentre chez moi.

Or put the time after the action:

Je commence à huit heures.

Je finis à dix-sept heures trente.

Pattern 2 — Reflexive routine: je me lève

Some everyday actions use a small word like me.

For now, learn the whole chunk:

Je me lève.

Tu te lèves.

Examples:

Je me lève à sept heures.

Tu te lèves à quelle heure ?

You do not need the full reflexive-verb system yet.

More useful routine chunks

je me lève — I get up

je me prépare — I get ready

je me repose — I rest

Pronunciation Focus

In natural speech:

je me lève

often sounds very compact.

Say it as one group:

/ʒə mə lɛv/

Also practise:

je commence à huit heures

je finis à cinq heures

Do not separate every word.

Phrase Builder

One compact pattern

TIME + ACTION + TIME

Le matin + je me lève + à sept heures.

Change the pieces:

Le matin + je commence + à huit heures.

À midi + je prends ma pause.

L’après-midi + je travaille.

Le soir + je rentre chez moi.

Build Your Day

Le matin, je ____________________ à ____________________.

À midi, je ____________________.

L’après-midi, je ____________________.

Le soir, je ____________________.
