Quick Check

  1. What three things does Camille buy?

  2. Which phrase tells the seller that she has finished ordering?

Answers:

  1. Tomatoes, peaches, and cheese.

  2. Ce sera tout.

How It Works

At a market, you usually need three things:

Say what you need

Il me faut des tomates.

or:

Je vais prendre des pommes.

Give the quantity

Un kilo de tomates.

Un demi-kilo de pêches.

Deux cents grammes de fromage.

Finish the purchase

The seller may ask:

Autre chose ?

or:

Et avec ça ?

If you are finished:

Ce sera tout.

Then you may hear:

Ça fait douze euros cinquante.

This means the seller is giving you the total price.

The useful flow is:

food → quantity → more? → total → finish

Micro Grammar

Pattern 1 — quantity + de

After a quantity, French uses:

quantity + de + food

Examples:

un kilo de tomates

un demi-kilo de pêches

deux cents grammes de fromage

Notice:

Not:

un kilo des tomates

But:

un kilo de tomates

Examples

Je voudrais un kilo de pommes.

Il me faut un demi-kilo de tomates.

Je vais prendre deux cents grammes de fromage.

Pattern 2 — en = some / of them

When the food is already known, French often uses:

en

Example:

— Vous voulez des pêches ?

— Oui, j’en veux.

The seller can ask:

Vous en voulez combien ?

This means:

How much / how many of them do you want?

At A1, learn the whole chunk:

Vous en voulez combien ?

and answer with a quantity:

Un kilo.

Un demi-kilo.

Deux cents grammes.

Pronunciation Focus

Practise:

un kilo de tomates

/œ̃ ki.lo də tɔ.mat/

and:

vous en voulez combien

/vu zɑ̃ vu.le kɔ̃.bjɛ̃/

Notice the linking sound:

vous‿en

Découvrir la France

French Market Stalls

Why do many French markets display prices by kilo?

At fruit, vegetable, cheese, and other food stalls, prices are often shown by weight.

This makes these phrases especially useful:

un kilo

un demi-kilo

deux cents grammes

Simple French

— Vous en voulez combien ?

— Un kilo, s’il vous plaît.

— Et avec ça ?

— Ce sera tout.

Remember

At a French market, knowing how to say a quantity can be more useful than knowing a long list of food vocabulary.

Final Challenge

Mission — Shop at a French Market

You are buying food for dinner.

Buy at least three things.

Your mission must include:

  1. one phrase with Il me faut…;

  2. one phrase with Je vais prendre…;

  3. two different quantities;

  4. an answer to Vous en voulez combien ?;

  5. a phrase to finish the purchase.

Model

— Bonjour. Qu’est-ce qu’il vous faut ?

— Il me faut un kilo de tomates, s’il vous plaît.

— Très bien. Et avec ça ?

— Je vais prendre des pêches.

— Vous en voulez combien ?

— Un demi-kilo, s’il vous plaît.

— Autre chose ?

— Oui, deux cents grammes de fromage.

— Très bien.

— Ce sera tout, merci. Ça fait combien ?

Extra Challenge

Change the quantities and buy different foods without looking back at the lesson.

Communication Win
