Quick Check

  1. What does Sofia order?

  2. Which phrases finish the café interaction?

Answers:

  1. A café crème and a croissant.

  2. L’addition, s’il vous plaît and Je peux payer par carte ?

How It Works

A café interaction can be very short.

Order

Use:

Je voudrais…

or:

Pour moi…

Examples:

Je voudrais un café.

Pour moi, un thé.

2. Add another item

Je voudrais un café et un croissant.

You do not need a separate sentence for every item.

3. Finish the order

The waiter may ask:

Et avec ça ?

If you do not want anything else:

C’est tout, merci.

4. Ask for the bill

In France, when you are ready to leave, you can say:

L’addition, s’il vous plaît.

5. Ask about payment

Je peux payer par carte ?

This one sentence is enough.

A complete café interaction can therefore be:

order → finish → bill → payment

Micro Grammar

Pattern 1 — un / une + café item

When ordering one countable item, use:

un + masculine noun

or:

une + feminine noun

Examples:

un café

un croissant

un thé

une tartine

You do not need to analyse the gender while speaking.

Learn the item as one chunk:

un café

un croissant

une tartine

Pattern 2 — Je voudrais / Pour moi + order

Two very useful café patterns:

Je voudrais + item

and:

Pour moi + item

Examples:

Je voudrais un café.

Je voudrais un croissant.

Pour moi, un thé.

Pour moi, une tartine.

What is the difference?

Je voudrais… is a complete polite request.

Je voudrais un café, s’il vous plaît.

Pour moi… is very natural when several people are ordering.

— Et pour vous ?
— Pour moi, un thé.

Pronunciation Focus

In:
