How It Works

In real conversation, you often need more than the exact hour.

You need to say when something happens.

Exact time

Il est neuf heures.

Day

On est jeudi.

Date

On est le 18 juin.

Weekend

Samedi, je travaille.

Dimanche, je suis libre.

Month

En juillet, je vais à Perpignan.

Summer

Cet été, je reste en France.

Year

Cette année, je voyage beaucoup.

The useful idea is simple:

time → day → month → bigger plan

You choose only the level of detail you need.

Micro Grammar

Pattern 1 — Telling the time

Use:

Il est + time

Examples:

Il est huit heures.

Il est huit heures et quart.

Il est huit heures et demie.

Il est neuf heures moins le quart.

Useful chunks:

et quart = quarter past

et demie = half past

moins le quart = quarter to

Special times:

Il est midi.

Il est minuit.

Pattern 2 — Placing a plan in time

Use a time expression first:

Samedi, je travaille.

En juillet, je reste à Paris.

En août, je pars au Grau-du-Roi.

Cet été, je voyage en France.

Cette année, j’apprends le français.

You do not need complicated future grammar yet.

At A1, these time chunks already make your meaning clear.

Pronunciation Focus

French time expressions are spoken in groups.

Say:

six heures et demie

as one rhythm group.

Notice the connection in:

deux‿heures

six‿heures

Do not pronounce every word separately.

Phrase Builder

One compact pattern

TIME + PERSON + PLAN

En août + je + pars au Grau-du-Roi.

Change the first part:

Samedi + je + travaille.

Dimanche + je + suis libre.

En juillet + je + reste à Paris.

Cet été + je + voyage en France.

Cette année + je + fais plus de sport.

Your Turn

Ce week-end + je + ____________________.

En juillet + je + ____________________.

En août + je + ____________________.

Cette année + je + ____________________.
