Answers:

  1. Compléter.

How It Works

When you do not understand, you do not need a long sentence.

Start with:

Pardon…

Then choose what you need.

If you do not understand:

Je ne comprends pas.

If you want the meaning:

Qu’est-ce que ça veut dire ?

If the person speaks too fast:

Plus lentement, s’il vous plaît.

If you want to hear it again:

Vous pouvez répéter ?

If spelling or reading would help:

Vous pouvez écrire ?

These are “rescue phrases”.

You can use them not only in class, but also in shops, offices, cafés, appointments and everyday conversations.

Micro Grammar

Today, focus on two small patterns.

Pattern 1 — ne… pas

To make a negative sentence:

Je comprends.

becomes:

Je ne comprends pas.

More examples

Je sais.
Je ne sais pas.

Je parle français.
Je ne parle pas français.

In everyday spoken French, you may also hear:

Je comprends pas.

The ne is often dropped in natural speech.

For now, learn the full form:

Je ne comprends pas.

Pattern 2 — Qu’est-ce que… ?

Use:

Qu’est-ce que ça veut dire ?

to ask for the meaning of something.

Learn it as one complete chunk.

Pronunciation Focus

Do not pronounce every word separately.

Say:

Je ne comprends pas.

as one rhythm group.

And in natural speech, listen for:

J’comprends pas.

You only need to recognise this reduced form for now.

Phrase Builder

Choose the problem, then choose the rescue phrase.

I don’t understand

Je ne comprends pas.

I need repetition

Vous pouvez répéter ?

It is too fast

Plus lentement, s’il vous plaît.

I need to see the word

Vous pouvez écrire ?

I need the meaning

Qu’est-ce que ça veut dire ?

Try It

Your teacher says something too quickly.

Pardon. ___________________________

Découvrir la France

French communication: “Pardon ?”

In France, Pardon ? is a very natural way of showing that you haven’t heard or understood something.

For example:

— Vous avez rendez-vous à quelle heure ?
— Pardon ?
— À quelle heure ?

Why does Mont-Saint-Michel sometimes look like an island?

Mont-Saint-Michel is in Normandy.

At high tide, the sea can surround it with water, so it looks like an island.

Simple French

— C’est une île ?

— Parfois, oui.

— Pourquoi ?

— Parce que la mer monte.

Remember

The sea can completely change the landscape around Mont-Saint-Michel.

Final Challenge

Your Mission

Role-play a short conversation between a teacher and a new student.

The teacher says something the student does not understand.

The student must use at least three rescue phrases.

Example

— Faites l’exercice deux.

— Pardon, je ne comprends pas.

— Regardez la phrase.

— Vous pouvez répéter ?

— Oui.

— Plus lentement, s’il vous plaît.

Success Criteria

Your mission is complete if you:

  • say that you do not understand;

  • ask for clarification or repetition;
